Erika Gault: How to Get Away With the Truth
March 19 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
“How to Get Away With the Truth” explores the creative ways with which black women have used language and their own bodies to speak truthfully about race, religion and gender in America. From reality TV shows like “Love & Basketball” to Shonda Rhimes’ runaway hit TV show “How to Get Away With Murder,” current media representations of black women are complex and often contradictory.
Erika Gault argues that such narratives tell us just as much about the climate of race, religion and gender in America then about black women themselves. Modern popular representations of black women point to earlier traditions of truth telling in black women’s history in America. Looking at popular representations of black women like Sojourner in the 19th century, Gault unpacks the complex identity of Black women in America and the way in which they have constantly sought to redefine themselves and, in the process, have changed America.
