Off Base: The Great Peterboro Baseball Story
August 25, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm| $5.005.00
Oneida Public Library is sponsoring a readers theater production of “Off Base: The Great Peterboro Baseball Story,” a play written by Tom Murray set in the hometown of Gerrit Smith one hot day in August 1865. The play offers a comic war of the sexes in the form of the first recorded baseball game played by all-girl teams. Major characters are based on actual historical figures, such as Gerrit Smith and his wife Ann, their granddaughter Nannie Miller and Smith’s cousin Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Taking liberties with history, the play adds to the mix of suffragettes and abolitionists some residents of Peterboro’s Home for Destitute Children, a charitable home founded by Gerrit Smith in 1871. This program was funded in part by a Humanities New York Action Grant.
