Hudson Hall marks the Centenary of Women’s Suffrage and the reopening of New York State’s oldest surviving theater with a new production of Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein’s rarely performed opera, “The Mother of Us All.” The work is a dramatized story about the American social reformer and civil rights activist Susan B. Anthony and the Women’s Suffrage Movement, which began in upstate New York. Directed by Hudson-based opera director R. B. Schlather and featuring an ensemble of talented Hudson Valley residents, Schlather reimagines the two-act opera as speaking directly to today’s heated political climate and the struggle between the personal and the political. The timeliness of this 1947 American opera about 19th-Century politics reminds us that our history is now.
