This reading group will examine the history of all women's struggle to obtain the right of citizenship by winning the right to vote. With insights to understand today's struggle to preserve the right to vote for all American citizens, no matter their race, sex, geographical location, party affiliation or other limiting factors.

Memorable American Fiction from West to East, a Reading & Discussion program at Lyons Public Library
This discussion series will use novels set in different time periods and regions in the United States as a starting point to discuss why certain books are memorable with readers by examining the merits (and shortfalls) of each novel. Each of these books highlights a central character. They are unified by the theme of how these characters cope with difficulties.

This series is designed for Woodstock adult readers who are interested in race relations as they’ve shaped American history and continue to impact our present. James Baldwin’s writings provide a nuanced literary viewpoint into this immediately relevant topic, and we anticipate that the discussion will draw parallels between Baldwin’s experiences and concerns and the effects of the ongoing prejudices against Black Americans that still predominate in our culture. The goal of this series is to prompt insightful and frank conversation in our community about racism in America and ways to work against it.
