Black Women and the 19th Amendment
March 12 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm$38 – $48
In 2020, the New-York Historical Society will mount Women March. This exhibition will be accompanied by an engaging and important lecture series exploring the history of women in politics and to whom exactly the 19th amendment extended voting rights.
“Black Women and the 19th Amendment” will feature a lecture from Brent Staples, author and editorial writer for the New York Times. The lecture will question the prevalent idea of the passage of the 19th amendment as the beginning of female enfranchisement, and what its passage meant for women of color. The lecture will be followed by a performance from Just Friends, a New York City-based vocal group, that has cultivated an enthusiastic following since its inception in 1989. They have performed with the Dance Theater of Harlem, Alice Parker and Melodious Accord, and the Canadian Brass and have appeared on HBO, as well as at the Riverside Church.
