Fort Apache Revisited

September 17, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm

$7

The Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC) will present a day-long program focusing on Fort Apache: both the Bronx neighborhood and Fort Apache in the west and the emergence of empire through the U.S. dealings with Native Americans and the island of Puerto Rico. The program will also celebrate Evelina López Antonetty, a community organizer, education leader and Puerto Rico Independista who was a driving force behind the efforts that transformed the Bronx from a symbol of urban blight in the 1960’s to the vibrant community that thrives just a few blocks from the BMHC.

The program will feature two panel discussions exploring: 1) indigenous perspectives on Fort Apache and the politics of sovereignty, and 2) Fort Apache, The Bronx: Resistance. The program will conclude with a concert at the Bronx Music Hall (BMH) Plaza featuring Bobby Sanabria & Ascension performing the music of the Fort Apache Band to recognize the role of arts and culture in resistance.
