Native New York exhibition opening reception

This exhibition will highlight the aesthetic diversity and dynamic character of the contemporary Haudenosaunee art scene in New York. It will challenge dominant and often stereotypical ideas regarding what constitutes “American Indian” art and identity by presenting work that demonstrates the artistic breadth and depth of the contemporary Native American art scene through a range of media and thematic topics as well as by highlighting the individual experiences of the artists and their Haudenosaunee cultural affiliations.
• work will include the historical objects and art work from the 20th and 21st century in order to show how artists continue to use, combine and/or transform traditional artforms, like beadwork and basketry, along with drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture and new emerging media such as photography, digital imagery, and video /film.
• The exhibit will focus on how the artists’ work communicates the lived realities of their contemporary lives and experiences along informed by ancient cultural knowledge and values about the environment, cosmology, and clan/cultural identity.
