The Humanities Centers Initiative (HCI) is an innovative statewide partnership between Humanities New York and a network of humanities centers based at nine New York State universities. Launched in 2012 and supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Whiting Foundation, the HCI supports humanities institutes, faculty, and graduate students in their commitment to public engagement.
The Public Humanities Grant offers support for humanities graduate students as they explore the public application of their scholarly interests, including training in the methods of the public humanities, networking, and professional development. Each Grantee designs and implements a public humanities project in collaboration with a community-based partner.
The Public Humanities Grant Application for 2022–23 is currently closed. All applicants who successfully registered before May 16 will be informed of the decision by June 13, 2022.
Applicants interested in the 2023–24 cohort are encouraged to review past requirements and check Humanities New York's Public Humanities Grant webpage in 2023.
Humanities Centers pair with local community groups to undertake a joint project. Up to $3,000 in grant support is available for programs such as panels, performances, or collaborative planning sessions between the grantee and the center.
