This opening will feature pieces generated from Black people contributing to history through their community centered work, art and activism. This project centers community storytelling with an eye to speaking the past to life, questioning the present, and reimagining the future. Stories of Black community members will be presented in various forms including visual arts, storytelling, zines, and other media.

Mohawk Hudson Folklife Festival

Washington Park at the Lake House Amphitheater Madison Avenue &, New Scotland Ave, Albany, NY

October 2nd join us in Albany’s Washington Park at the Lake House Amphitheater for the Mohawk Hudson Folklife Festival. The festival will feature the artists, tradition bearers and musicians identified by our Community Fieldworkers. Artists will display and demonstrate their work throughout the day for visitors to engage and participate. Demonstrations will include; African Hair Braiding, Iconography, Wood Carving and foodways demonstrations. Adults and children will have the chance to try their hand at crafts inspired by these traditions in workshops and activities.

Local Learning: The National Network For Folk Arts In Education

The Rockwell Museum 111 Cedar Street, Corning, NY

This community conversation, the first in a series, introduces the broader community of the Southern Finger Lakes to three local cultural groups and their traditions through self-representative media projects created by members of those communities. These media presentations are followed by a public conversation around cultural stewardship and will demonstrate practical ways for other local communities to document and investigate their own traditions. Resources will be provided to the public to assist others in becoming cultural stewards of their own community.

Intersection of Contemporary African American Poetry and Hip Hop

Walt Whitman Birthplace Association 246 Old Walt Whitman Road, Huntington Station, NY

A performance poet of notable recognition will emcee this Open Mic poetry reading event. The emcee will connect the literary and historical aspects of Hip-Hop poetry performances to current poetry trends and will read their own poetry. Collaboration with Westbury High School students, Long Island. The public is invited to read their own Hip-Hop poetry. Participant readers must pre-register for Open Mic. The event will be a hybrid - zoom and onsite live-stream for a small gathering. Instructions for pre-registration sign-ups will be posted on our website.
