Everything you need to run your own town-hall event, and a micro-grant to help fund it. A facilitator, chosen by your group, leads a conversation for 8-20 participants using the training and materials supplied by Humanities NY. The program toolkit contains a short text focused on a hot topic or occasion in American life such as immigration, MLK Jr. Day of Service, the environment, or democracy. You can browse the full listing of themes below. Toolkits are available for Adults, Young Adults, and Kids, unless otherwise noted.
In order to make the transition to the new Application Portal, Community Conversations will be temporarily closed between 12/14/18 and 1/1/19.
Who Can Host
Anyone may host a Community Conversation. Tax-exempt organizations and schools in New York State are eligible to receive a $200 micro-grant to help defray the cost of hosting the program.
Who Can Participate
Community Conversations serve three distinct audiences: Kids (upper elementary to middle school students), Young Adults (high school and college students), and Adults.
Community Conversations may be scheduled at any time of the year, though some themes are well-suited to commemorations, holidays and other seasonal events.
Community Conversations Toolkits are provided for review in the application process. If you are interested in previewing the materials you may contact Program Officer Connor Goodwin.
Humanities NY provides host organizations with facilitator training and resources to help host a successful conversation. $200 stipends are paid only to tax-exempt organizations in New York State that have: applied and been approved; attended a training webinar; gathered at least eight participants; and submitted a final evaluation.
